[Guide] Choose the right tank stand height

When it comes to determining the right tank stand height it’s all about the highest point you need water to feed into. Factors that you have to consider include:

  1. What the highest point you need water to flow into is.
  2. Whether the building is a double storey or single storey.
  3. Whether your stand is flat or sloping. If your stand is uneven, you can take advantage of the higher points by placing your stand there. In that case, you can make use of a shorter stand.
  4. Some houses built pre-1990 have electric geysers that are installed, not on the ceiling boards but higher up in the ceiling. If that applies to you, you may need a stand that’s higher than usual.
  5. Whether your house is built on a special foundation leading the floor level to be higher than the sorrounding ground. The tank stand may need to be higher than usual to cater for that increased height.
  6. When the roof or ceiling are higher than usual or higher than most houses in the market
Scenario A: Single storey buildings general guidelines
  • Highest point is solar geyser on the roof – 6 metre stand is adequate
  • Highest point is geyser in the ceiling – 4 or 5 metre stand is adequate
  • Highest points are showers, taps, sinks – 3 metre stand is adequate
Scenario B: Double storey buildings general guidelines

(Generally speaking, we recommend that you book a site visit.)

  • Highest point is solar geyser on the roof – 7 metres to 9 metres high stands may be adequate
  • Highest point is geyser in the ceiling – 7 metre stand may be adequate.
  • Highest points are showers, taps, sinks on ground floor – 4M stand may be adequate.
Scenario C: Irrigation and taps only general guidelines

If the tank stand is only supplying irrigation pipes laid on the ground and/or taps a 2.5 metre stand is adequate.

Custom tank stands

The standard heights we listed above are the standard sizes. Most households can make use of one of those sizes. But we can customise stands ranging from 1 metre to 11 metres high to carry as little as 1000L and as much as 10,000L. The largest stands we’ve fabricated and installed to date are

  • a 11 metre stand to carry two x 10,000L tanks for a community in Msengezi.
  • a 12 metre stand to carry a 10,000L tank for a hospital in Harare.

For double storey properties we’ve customised tank tands ranging from 7.2 metres, 7.8 metres up to 8.6 metres.

We’ve also fabricated a 0.5 metre stand, sitting at 50 centimetres off the ground. They only needed a stand to place their tank on so the goal wasn’t water pressure.
