[Checklist] Electric borehole pump installation

This checklist will help you if;

  • You’re planning on buying material and then hiring a plumber and/or electrician to fit the borehole pump or
  • Your installer has given you a detailed quote – but you want to be sure that there won’t be additions along the way

We haven’t given exact specifications or sizes because they depend on your circumstances. For example,

  • A 0.5HP pump may be appropriate for a 30M deep borehole, but not for a 100M deep borehole
  • 25mm pipes may be appropriate for a home, but not for a 10 storey apartment building

So with that in mind, here is the list of every component that you need when you install an electric borehole pump:

  1. The borehole pump – pumps water from the bottom of the borehole
  2. Pressure tank – stabilise pressure & controls the pump
  3. Polypipe – supplies water from the pump underground to the ground
  4. Poly-adapters – connect the polypipe to the pump
  5. Nylon rope – used to lower and raise the pump and which secures the pump when its suspended in the borehole
  6. Power cable to supply power from your power source to the pump
  7. Lockable manhole cover – secures the pump from theft & vandalism
  8. Borehole top cover – covers the top of the borehole
  9. Control box – controls and protects the pump by controlling power supply and controlling the voltage
  10. MCB –  protects the pump and the control box in the event of a power surge or short circuit.
  11. Non return valves – prevents water from flowing BACK into the borehole.

These last 2 are optional, but we highly recommend them:

  1. Sand filter – filters sand and other small particles
  2. Lime scale filter – filters sand & prevents build-up of scale and corrosion in pipes
