Compare 5 Garage door opening systems

When deciding on garage doors there are 5 types of opening systems you can choose from. Doors that roll up, doors that slide open, doors that swing out, sectional garage doors and those that tip up. We’ve put together 5 short videos for you in this article so you can see how each opening mechanism works.

1. Roll up garage doors

These are sometimes referred to as roller shutter doors. They roll up when opening and roll down when closing. You can open them manually or you can install a motor so you control them by pressing a button.

2. Sliding garage doors

These doors have wheels and slide to the side when opening and closing. You can open them manually or you can install a motor so you control them by pressing a button. This type of opening system will only work when you have a double or triple garage. When you have a single garage opening, there will be no space for the garage door to slide to.

3. Swing out doors

These doors are hinged to the wall and they swing out to open. You can open them manually or you can install a motor so you control them by pressing a button.
We don’t usually recommend these because:

  • They can only open by swinging out because inside the garage is where you would park your vehicles.
  • Every time you are about to park, you’ll have to estimate whether you have left enough space for the doors to swing out.
  • You can only install these in yards where there is enough space in front of the garage to allow the doors to swing out.
4. Sectional doors

These doors are made up of sections or panels that are joined together by a track system. When they open, the panels or sections of the door slide up and against the ceiling. You can open them manually or you can install a motor so you control them by pressing a button.

5. Tip up doors

These are also sometime referred to as Lazyman doors or “Up and Over” doors or Canopy doors. The doors tip up to open or downwards to close.  You can open them manually or you can install a motor so you control them by pressing a button.

In summary…

Those are the 5 main types of opening mechanisms or types of garage doors you can install for your home or office. The videos we’ve put together above show automated versions of the doors. But you can also have the same types of garage doors opening manually.

Manual doors are offered to considerable abuse and are commonly
found propped or wedged open. Generally, garage doors are quite heavy making them
difficult to operate. When you’re arriving home with a car filled with groceries, it may be extremely
annoying to park your automobile, get out, open your garage door, drive it to your garage, and after that get out and
    close the garage door again.
