Tank stand safety design features

We have installed over a 1200 tank stands since 2014. Over the years we have researched and decided on a tank stand design that does not collapse. The largest stands we’ve fabricated and installed to date are

  • a 11 metre tank stand to carry two x 10,000L tanks for a community in Msengezi.
  • a 12 metre tank stand to carry a 10,000L tank for a hospital in Harare.

We offer a 10 year guarantee on all tank stands that we install. Here is a run down of the safety design features that enable us to do that.

Safety design features

1) We use brand new virgin steel, that is we do not harvest steel from old buildings or building sites to manufacture tank stands.  By using new steel this ensures that the structure is strong as it would have been manufactured using quality steel.

2) We consistently use the following types of steel on every tank stand that we manufacture

  • Tank stands carrying 1000L: Uprights 50 x 3mm Angle iron, Diagonal struts 25 x 3 mm Angle iron, Centre frames 25 x 3mm Angle iron
  • Tank stands carrying 2000L: Uprights 40 x 5mm Angle iron, Diagonal struts 25 x 3 mm Angle iron, Centre frames 40 x 3mm Angle iron
  • Tank stands carrying 5000L: Uprights 60 x 6mm Angle iron, Diagonal struts 25 x 3 mm Angle iron, Centre frames 40 x 3mm Angle iron
  • Tank stands carrying 10000L: Uprights 80 x 6mm Angle iron, Diagonal struts 25 x 3 mm Angle iron, Centre frames 40 x 3mm Angle iron

3) We use a combination of angle iron crossed with flat bars to fabricate the platform where the tank sits. This reduces the risk of the tank bulging at the bottom as the gaps between the bars will be minimised. We do not use wood on the platform because it degrades over time.

4) Steel  ladder

We install a strong ladder on every stand – to use to climb onto the stand to access the platform. This is a secure way of accessing the tank on top of the stand.

5) Steel cage

Our tank stand design also includes a security cage around the platform. The cage serves two purposes;

  • It’s safer for plumbers or water delivery personnel to move around the water tank
  • It secures the tank when it is empty from being moved by heavy winds

6) During installation

Experienced workshop staff members install each tank stand. Some of the key tasks are ensuring that;

  • We install the tank stand at a perfect right angle to the ground
  • We dig the correct width, length and height for the uprights or legs to sit in
  • We mix the correct concrete mixture
